Golfing at Buffalo Creek Golf Club
Rockwall is home to three exceptional 18-hole public golf courses and one 9-hole practice and driving range.
Ranked consistently in the top five courses in the Dallas area and top 10 in Texas, award-winning Buffalo Creek Golf Club offers everything for the novice and professional with its par 71 course. Annually ranked four stars by Golf Digest, the Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish design was developed by Charles Perry, who, from 1976 to 1985, was president and CEO of Jack Nicklaus’ Golden Bear International. It opened in 1970. The Zagat Survey rated Buffalo Creek Golf Club as one of America’s Top Golf Courses for 2006-2007. Holes 6 and 16 have been rated as two of the toughest in the state by the Dallas Morning News. Over the years, Buffalo Creek has played host to the USGA Open, Amateur and Mid-Amateur qualifying events. Designed around its natural terrain, the course has a contemporary classic design which belies an austere test. Highly touted for its layout, condition, and overall attention to detail, no matter who you talk to in the DFW area, they all seem to praise the superb condition of the course from tee to green. The Club includes a driving range, chipping green, practice bunkers, pro shop, event facility and clubhouse, which offers clubs & cart rental, instruction and a snack bar.
Known for many years as The Shores Country Club, Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club has a par 72 course laid out along the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard, stretching to a challenging 7,281 yards from the back tees. The scenic, rolling fairways provide an expansive view of the water. It was initially designed in the late ’70s by Ralph Plummer as a 7,000-yard-plus layout, with five holes on the lake, as well as water on another seven. As you wind your way around and over creeks, ponds and bays, you will be challenged to put your best strategy and skills to work to conquer this traditional-style layout. This Jeffrey Blume-redesigned course offers excitement for experienced players. Several sets of tees allow players of every level to enjoy themselves on this course. Daily rates for guests range from $25 to $75. Annual rates are available for club members. The Club includes a restaurant, tennis court, swimming pool and pro shop which offers cart & club rental, instruction and clothing sales.
In nearby Royse City is the par 72 Stone River Golf Club, which offers an enjoyable but fair test of golf on a beautiful site of rolling green acres with ponds and trees complete with a putting green, practice range, and clubhouse. Greens, fairways and tees are all Bermuda grass. The par 72 course will play to 6,432 yards from the Blue Tees, 5,873 yards from the White Tees, and 5,014 yards from the Red Tees. Open to the public for daily play, as well as offering the option of memberships, tee times are preferred, but walk-ups will be allowed to play. Tee times may be made up to 7 days in advance. Course rates range from $13 to 25 and annual memberships are available.
A-1 Golf Center is a 9-hole, par 3 track which features holes ranging from 75-190 yards, with elevated tees and greens and water in play on three holes. No. 7 is considered the signature, about a 100-yard hole into an island green. While there are no bunkers, the lighted practice facility and driving range have everything you’ll need to work on all aspects of your game. Designed by Doyle Anderson, the Center opened in 2000. Fees are $20 weekdays and $25 weekends.
